Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom Teeth are removed for various reasons but primarily when impacted or problematic. Wisdom Teeth may threaten a patient's health. As Wisdom Teeth can vary tremendously in complexity, depending on the patient and the tooth, a wide variety of instruments and techniques exist to address specific situations.
Some Reasons for Surgery
- Insufficient space for Wisdom Teeth (impacted wisdom teeth)
- As part of Orthodontic management (such as braces)
- Severe gum disease which may affect the supporting tissues and bone structure of teeth
- Severe tooth decay or infection
Complications
Although we are dedicated to easing patient discomfort, complications do sometimes occur. Some of these include:
- Infection: although rare, it can occur on occasion
- Bleeding: small amounts of blood mixed in the saliva after extractions are normal
- Swelling: often dictated by the amount of surgery performed
The dentist will discuss these and any other potential complications with you at your consultation. Each patient is treated with great care and the dentist has a variety of means at his disposal to address all these potential complications.
